Montenegro features some of the most beautiful coastlines on the Adriatic, with sandy beaches and sub-tropical vegetation, in all stretching a total of 294 km. Of this, the 117 beaches represent 73 km, and the Adriatic is one of the cleanest and warmest seas in the Mediterranean. The sea temperature can reach between 21° c - 27°c for up to six months of the year. The interior is completely unspoilt, with high, extensive mountain ranges forming a magnificent background to the coastal strip, intersected by river gorges and deep valleys. The highest peak stands at 2522 m and is situated in a UNESCO world heritage site, which also contains the Tara River that for over 100 km runs through one of the deepest, most secluded canyons in the world. As well as its spectacular natural features, this little country abounds with numerous historical monuments and wonderful towns and cities illustrating the invaluable treasures of a turbulent history. Nevertheless, the modern political situation is very stable and the pro-European government hope to take Montenegro into the EU, having already adopted the Euro as the national currency. Medical facilities remain limited for the time being and basic medical supplies are often unavailable, although doctors are well-trained. Hospitals generally require payment in cash and prescribed medicines must also be paid for, and all visitors are advised to have health insurance with the facility of emergency repatriation.
